Arsenic in Verdi Well Water

Oct 15, 2026  ·  6 min read

Verdi, Nevada well country west of Reno: iron, hardness, and arsenic often arrive together.
Chris on arsenic in well country west of Reno. First check whether Verdi is on a well or TMWA.

Verdi is well country west of Reno, up the Truckee toward the California line. Most houses here are on a private well. A smaller set of Truckee Meadows addresses is on TMWA. That split is the whole story of this town: one neighbor may drink treated municipal water; the next pumps from volcanic and basin-fill groundwater that never sees a plant.

When a Verdi well report lands on our bench, arsenic is rarely the only line item. Iron, manganese, hardness, and intermittent odor show up together. Water that looks clear at the tap can still turn orange after it sits in a glass. That is iron oxidizing in air — and iron is one of the contaminants that will foul arsenic media if you skip the stages in front of it.

What we have already published from Verdi

We wrote up a Verdi install years ago in Verdi, NV Water Solution. That home had iron, manganese, and hardness chewing through toilet floats every six to eight months, plus 30 ppb arsenic on the well. The arsenic went to reverse osmosis. The well chemistry went to a sanitizing softener built for iron and manganese. We noted then that it is rare to find a Verdi well with no arsenic on the report. The infographic range we publish for Verdi today is 0 to 150 ppb: some wells under the EPA limit, some well over.

TMWA on one street, a well on the next

West Washoe is patchy. A house on TMWA can share a cul-de-sac with a house on a domestic well. Copying the neighbor’s 30 ppb result, or assuming TMWA’s CCR covers a well, is the local mistake. Confirm your source first. If you are on TMWA, read TMWA’s report. If you are on a well, that report is not yours.

The short science

EPA’s arsenic limit is 10 ppb. DRI’s 2022 study (174 wells) found 22% over the limit across Northern Nevada. Pure Water’s tested wells come in over the limit 58% of the time — the wells people call us about, not a random county draw. Keep those percentages separate. As(III) versus As(V) still decides whether we oxidize before we adsorb. In Verdi, iron and manganese are the usual blockers, which is why the four-step train is documented on the campaign page instead of repeated here.

Verdi’s published range is 0 to 150 ppb. Zero is possible. So is a well that needs RO, as in the 30 ppb case we already wrote up.

What to do in Verdi

“Arsenic treatment is not one-size-fits-all. It must be properly tested, designed, and installed to perform correctly.”

Bryce Pollock, managing partner

Check the bill or the meter: TMWA or a well. On a well, get a certified laboratory arsenic test and a full well panel for iron, manganese, and hardness before anyone sells you a single tank. On TMWA, arsenic is a municipal-treatment question, not a backyard well question. We still design drinking-water systems for city homes; we do not pretend the city CCR is a well report.

If you are on a Verdi well, or you have never confirmed whether the house is on TMWA, start with a certified lab arsenic test. October is Arsenic Awareness Month. Call (775) 324-2001 or request a free certified lab arsenic test.
