This is one of the most common questions we get from Northern Nevada well water owners. The short answer: sometimes — but usually, iron requires dedicated treatment beyond a standard softener.
Types of Iron in Well Water
There are several forms of iron commonly found in Northern Nevada well water, and each behaves differently. Dissolved (ferrous) iron exists in a soluble form — you can't see it in the water, but it turns orange when exposed to air or chlorine. A standard softener can often handle low levels of dissolved iron (up to 2–3 mg/L).
Particulate (ferric) iron exists as rust particles suspended in the water. You can often see it as orange or brown tint. A softener's resin bed will trap some, but will quickly foul and need frequent cleaning. Oxidizing iron filters are a better solution.
Iron bacteria is a biological contamination — microorganisms that feed on iron and create that distinctive orange slime and terrible odor. A softener does nothing for iron bacteria; you need UV treatment, oxidation, or chlorination.
