One distinction worth understanding first: purification and softening are different processes solving different problems. Purification (carbon, RO, UV) removes contaminants. Softening removes hardness minerals. A drinking water RO system will not make your shower feel different, and a softener will not remove arsenic. 1. Health and Safety
Even treated municipal water can carry traces of chlorine, lead, and other substances picked up between the treatment plant and your tap. Well water can contain sediment, bacteria, and locally, arsenic.
Purification removes these. For Northern Nevada specifically, arsenic is the one to focus on — local geology produces it naturally, and it is not something you can taste or see.

Worth knowing: the residue in your laundry may be doing more of this than the water in your shower. Detergent held in fabric sits against skin all day and all night.
